Why Do You Need a Website?
Instructional design is quite a dynamic industry.
There’s always a new shiny thing to help shape the learning experience. And if you’re part of it, having a virtual presence is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity.
You need a website!
And a well-crafted one is the digital storefront of an instructional designer; it offers a myriad of benefits that go beyond a mere online portfolio. Now, when you’re starting out, I don’t think it’s necessary to have all the bells and whistles – you can use a basic site even hosted somewhere for you for free (like Carrd for example), and work up to buying one with a domain name of your choosing at a later date.
But, I’ll just list the things I think are important and why having a website is paramount for instructional designers.
To Showcase Your Portfolio With a Bit of Pizazz
Your work deserves more than just a slot in a physical portfolio or a few pages on a CV or resume. A website provides a dynamic and interactive space to showcase your diverse projects. You can include case studies, visuals, and even video demonstrations to give potential clients or employers a comprehensive understanding of your capabilities. It’s not just about what you’ve done; it’s about how effectively you can communicate your expertise, and a website does that with flair.
To Establish Your Professional Brand
Basically, it’s a way to big yourself up! Or in more businesslike terms – your website is your personal brand ambassador in the digital realm. It’s not just a collection of projects; it’s an embodiment of your professional identity. Choose a clean and user-friendly design that reflects your style. Incorporate your logo, colour palette, and a consistent tone to create a memorable brand image. As an instructional designer, your website is a canvas to paint the picture of who you are and what you bring to the table.
To Reach a Global Audience
In the digital age, your impact is not limited to a local audience. A website opens the door to a global stage, allowing you to showcase your skills to potential clients, employers, or collaborators from around the world. Whether you’re a freelance instructional designer or seeking opportunities with international organizations, a website provides the platform to extend your reach far beyond geographical boundaries.
To Demonstrate Technological Proficiency
As an instructional designer, your proficiency with technology is a cornerstone of your skill set. A website is a living example of your technological know-how. Use it to implement the latest web design trends, incorporate multimedia elements, and optimize for user experience. This not only showcases your technical skills but also reinforces the idea that you practice what you preach when it comes to effective use of technology in education.
To Centralise Your Online Presence
Your website is your digital headquarters, a one-stop hub that centralises your online presence. Integrate links to your professional social media profiles, relevant blog posts, and even online courses you’ve developed. This centralized location makes it easy for anyone interested in your work to explore more facets of your professional journey without navigating through various platforms.
To Share Your Thoughts and Insights
Blogging on your website is a powerful tool for establishing yourself as a thought leader in instructional design. Share your insights, best practices, and reflections on the evolving landscape of education. A well-maintained blog demonstrates your expertise and also attracts an audience interested in your thoughts, maintaining a sense of community around your brand. I go into more detail about why it’s important for instructional designers to blog here.
To Open Doors to Collaboration
Your website is a virtual meeting place, inviting collaboration. Include a contact form or a dedicated collaboration section to encourage inquiries from potential clients or collaborations with fellow instructional designers. Whether you’re seeking freelance opportunities, partnerships, or consulting gigs, a website facilitates the initial connection that can lead to fruitful professional relationships.
Basically, you can’t go wrong if you have an online presence!
In the huge world of instructional design, your website is your digital beacon, guiding interested parties to explore the depth of your expertise. It’s more than just a collection of pages; it’s a strategic asset that amplifies your brand, extends your reach, and opens doors to opportunities. As an instructional designer, your website is not just a choice; it’s an essential tool for navigating the digital landscape of modern education.
